Can't get into Safe Mode

Hi. I'm trying to get into Safe Mode on my X61s to do some printer driver installation troubleshooting per the MS Knowledgebase.

Win XP "Help and Support" says "In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8. "

Well, I do not see "Please select the operating system . . .."

Tried pressing F8 during boot but get keyboard error message and sent to BIOS.

Using the blue ThinkVantage button brings that up but Safe Mode is not an option there.

I know this should be simple but I am stuck.

Thank you for any tips.

What about hitting 'delete' during startup, I always thought that that brought up an additional screen interface to select options from?

Or can you get a floppy/CD boot disk and run safe mode off of that?

By any chance do you have Rescue and Recovery v4.2? If so, in the following thread at least a couple people further down mention that turning out to be why they couldn't get into safe mode. A workaround was found for it and the other stuff discussed, that didn't require removing it:
