I finally decided to upgrade my X61s to an hitachi 7K200 (SDD upgrade was outside my budget), but i have some problems in setting it up.
I did the following:
- 1) Made a full backup to an external USB disk,
- 2) Put the new disk in the X61s.
- 3) Booted from the external USB disk having the R&R backup
- 4) Started the full recovery.
- 5) When requested, rebooted from the internal disk.
- 6) Booted in preboot, restarted full recovery.
The recovery end, the machine is restarted but it do not boot, i get a black screen with a blinking cursor.
I checked, and the disk actually contains the system and the data recovered.
I checked the forum, and i found a discussion about the boot sector, suggesting to use the repair console of the Windows XP installation disk. So i did, used fixboot (and later fixmbr and fixboot).
No result, i still get a black screen and the cursor.
Any other suggestion ?
This night i'll try to reinstall from the recovery CDs, and then to recover the backup, but this is just to try an alternative.
OK, i still have the original disk, so no harm is done other than the cost of the hitachi, but having a restore system not able to restore a backup make me very nervous :-< ... !!
Thanks,
Maurizio

Your procedure is correct, but you must use the following to repair the MBR:

Solved
Thanks a lot for your link.
I previously found an older one that did not worked.
In the meanwhile, i tried to restore to factory condition from the recovery CDs, and it worked, and i then restored the full backup from there, and it worked fine. I suppose that the recovery CD installation fix the MBR.
