sleep, hibernation, restart problem x61

I just received a refurbished x61 bought from Lenovo and when I put it into sleep or hibernate modes or or attempt to restart from XP's start menu, it does nothing. Screen darkens but it does not reboot. I have to hold down the power button to turn it off and on physically.
