Yeah, just purchased them tonight. I bought three hoping I might get one that's perfect. I'll report back, but being as they are in China, who knows how long it'll be on shipping. Still, decent price, hoping for the best.erik wrote: have you taken delivery of the panels and tested them? if so, how did they turn out?
a month ago i bought a panel for a forum member who wanted an X61SXGA+ built. the first panel was defective. it was an absolute pain trying to get a replacement and the seller was in the US. i can't imagine trying to exchange a panel between the US and china.
that's darned cheap though. i paid over twice that and lost $15 returning the defective panel.
at least the project turned out well. the panel i received wound up being one of the best i've built to date -- no dead pixels, no bright corners, and no gigantic spots of dust from refurbishing (which all these panels are... none of them are truly "new" no matter what the sellers claim).

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
If I was going to upgrade my X61 (non 'S' version), there seems to be a choice of HV121P01-101 or HV121P01-100 as screen replacements.
Can someone tell me if either are a straight swap or would both require a custom cable be made ?
Basically I either upgrade my X61 screen or spend the money replacing my X60 motherboard with a X61 one (dual 2 core, have extra RAM etc) but both would be stuck with stock screens (use them photo and video editing and the extra screen size on my X61 would be nice).

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
both displays would require a custom cable. there's no getting around that, even with an XGA tablet panel in an X6x.
the -101 won't fit correctly. besides, there's no reason to buy it over a -100. the difference between the 100 and 101 is the shape of the metal frame, the plastic and glass writing surfaces, and the model of digitizer on the back. the displays themselves are the same underneath. i say this coming from first-hand experience.

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
no, i'm trying to keep you from plugging a tablet display into your notebook cable and frying your system planar -- since that's what happens when you cross pins 1/2/3 and dump +3.3V to ground.
you don't have to take my word for it though. just be prepared to buy yourself a new notebook.
if i were trying to pimp cables, i'd have gone into mass production with them by now. since profit is low and people don't want to spend the cash for them, once i sell the 2 or 3 i have on hand, i probably won't be making more.

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
I'd just like to throw my hat into the arena too. Recently, I've completed this mod on an X32 and it is fantastic. My plan has always been to perform this modification on an X61s and this will probably be early next year. Since I mainly use Linux, it seems the BIOS mod is not a requirement, thus only the cable mod is required. A guide to making the cable would be great - I'm willing to give this a go - though if ready-made cables become a possibility, then I'm interested.

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
The Kapton tape arrived today -now to find some time this side of Christmas to get the cable made.
And I'm still looking for the modified BIOS for the X61 to run at SXGA+ resolution. If anyone has a copy or link please PM me

Bad news to me. I originally planned to install an XGA tablet panel in my X61. Now I have to find a custom cable too.erik wrote:both displays would require a custom cable. there's no getting around that, even with an XGA tablet panel in an X6x.

I'll be quite interested to hear how these panels turn out, and exactly what you get from the seller.charles.atcher wrote:Well they've shipped. Received a tracking number six hours after I paid.
From the pictures it looks like the panels are 'bare' - i.e. no digitiser or writing surface. At least I hope so - that would be perfect for doing these mods

So far they look fantastic. A couple of signs that it was a "refurb" not new. There is some tape residue on the connector, and a new part number sticker over the original.
The aluminum frame is stamped with the part number in the lower right. There is no digitizer or writing surface, just the screen itself. I plan on testing them tonight or tomorrow night.

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
definitely let us know how they test out. that's 95% of the battle.
like i said at the end of the last page, none of these panels are new no matter what resellers claim. everything is either used or refurbished in small labs (and not dust-free ones, either). if any of your panels have dust spots inside, you can guarantee that the CCFL was replaced.

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
Well I'm currently using one of the panels I purchased, and so far it looks darn good. Having never used a Flexview screen, I'm not sure if it's a perfect example, but I see no dirt or dust specks, and no pressure marks. Doesn't seem quite as bright as I'd imagine it would, but perhaps that's just me.

Interesting - last week the listings were for "New", now they show "Used" and in the description say "90% new and original (it very new)". Obviously a language issue !

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
They are now also out of HV121P01-100 panels, they only have -101s
(I just got an email from the seller telling me their last -100 panel was poor quality and they had no more stock, and asked whether I would like a refund, or a -101 panel)
Anyone have a -100 panel for sale?

Well, on Friday, I got another -100 panel and it tested well on my X31 test machine. All that's left for me to do is the cable.
Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
I have a question for those who made their own jumper harness. Where did you order parts for this?
I only see one post refering to http://www.digikey.com, but the member never posted back whether it worked.
It might be my only option to order the connectors from there unless somebody knows another source, preferably in EU.

Help needed!
I finally managed to get hold of all the parts for the mod. Bought panel from the chinese company on ebay.
I put it all together and got following screen when i switched it on:

I've tested the cable. There are no shorts, and all connections should be ok. I've used 28awg wire (not coax) and shielded the two 3.3V cables as suggested by Erik. I have the 51NB bios.

To my untrained eye that looks like the wires are crossed. I'd recheck each one is going from A to A and not A to B !!!

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
Well, the wires weren't crossed.
My friend came over with his x60t today, and we had a testing session. Result: my screen doesn't work in the x60t. His screen works in mine, so the cable is okay (apart from some minor shielding problem). The bad news is that my panel is bad. Worse news is that I've already started cutting off the tabs, so it's gonna be impossible to return it as faulty.
will have to look around for another lcd.

Andrzej,
What I would try to do if possible, is purchase another that has damage to the LCD screen itself. Then swap over the circuit board. Perhaps your screen is fine, but the electronics are faulty.

Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
Yes, I think the screen itself is fine with no cracks.
How would you get about changing the circuit board? I don't see any dettachable connectors.

Well, I've finally got a couple of days to myself and I'm putting together my parts list. I have a question on the wire that people having been using and in particular, on the best choice if I'm to minimize interference? Any recommended sources for the cable? I'll be ordering the connectors from Digikey, since as stated earlier in the thread, they seem to be the only source and they do have a UK website, which avoids a few hassles.
Re: SXGA+ on a X60s (non tablet)
Yes, but the parts are sent from US anyway, so you won't avoid customs. I ordered a short DVI-cable from digikey and stripped it to use the wires inside. They are not coax, so shielding is still a problem. Will look into this when I get my hands on a working panel.Mooseifer wrote:Well, I've finally got a couple of days to myself and I'm putting together my parts list.
