LCD color correction and calibration

#1 Post by gunston » Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:52 am

think everyone has the similar issue like lcd wash out for X60/x61/s.

would like to know what is the best way and software out there to calibrate....

just knew that Spyder2 pro can do a better but the software is rather too expensive...

any ideas , all the thinkpaders ???

any answers / conclusion ?

i see no one answered yet. i was also interested in finding a way to calibrate the colors, as they are not really correct in my monitor (too much on the bluish side).
adobe gamma isn't good as u need to have a control for contrast while you're calibrating.
i can use the manual feature of the graphic card to do color corrections, but i can't know if my corrections are good...

did u find an answer / solution?
thanks

as soon as you change the brightness/contrast/color in the panel of the x3100, it erases the previous settings of your icc profile

since i don't know if i'm understood:

try to modify the contrast via the intel panel, the color etc, clic apply, exit

then, go to the intel panel again, clic on the red, then on all, then press tab to reach the brightness area, and press the up key below the right shift key, the color goes back to the default mode, wich is really crappy

same thing with the displayprofile. exe where you can find that yhe tplcd.icm from the lenovo website don't change anything

example:

dl some icm here
http://dl.free.fr/qyk33Vqzl/icm.zip

unzip the display.zip and install the icm fils in the right file of windows, and make sur you go to right clic on desktop/properties/setting/advandced/color management and see the icm files

ok, then run displayprofile.exe, and you get all the icm files which are installed

ok , then clic on some of them, and your screen will change as soon as you click

allright now, you clic on tplcd then on a profile which is different of tplcd, tpflx and srgb, then on tplcd

so normally, you get a change in the color behavior on clic 1, but nothing on clic2 ie when you come back to tpcld

ok, i have to say i'm quite noob with color management /icc/ etc

but that my experience

here's an idea, though i don't know how well it would actually work...

the colorsync calibration tool on osx guides you through setting the 25% and 75% grays just like how adobe gamma does the 50%. so on windows, if you were to create similar patterns in photoshop and have them on-screen while you adjust your video card settings, maybe that will help.

see http://www.computer-darkroom.com/colors ... sync_2.htm

i think it's...
1) alternating black and white lines, with a 50% patch
2) alternating black and 50% lines, with a 25% patch
3) alternating 50% and white lines, with a 75% patch

you'd probably need to do separate r/g/b ones instead of just black and white.

honestly though, if color calibration is critical enough that you'd be willing to go to that much trouble, you'd be far better off investing in proper calibration hardware and software. even on osx, the difference between the 3-point visual calibration and a true hardware calibration is like night and day.

several of the calibration products come with multi-seat licenses (i'm using coloreyes display pro), so you might be able to rationalize the purchase by spreading the cost over multiple machines. in my case, i've got my thinkpad, macbook, and desktop all matching quite well, and i've found that to be well worth the investment.
