Recovery partition intact, but cannot boot from

I'm trying to perform a system recovery, and my recovery partition seems to be intact (checked via a linux bootable usb stick). However, I am unable to boot from this partition by pressing the thinkvantage button or by opening the bootable device lists. Any suggestions, anyone? Thanks!

One other question: is there a way to retrieve my Win XP cd key from this recovery partition file structure so that if/when I change hard drives and wish to install windows (I have an OEM Win XP CD) I don't have to call Microsoft and deal with activation headaches? Thanks

The XP key should be printed on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop.

The XP Key on the bottom of the laptop is NOT the same as the OEM key of the original XP installation. The former requires activation, the latter does not. One can "extract" the OEM XP key from a running system, if one has the original system up and running.

Yea "Magical Jelly Bean" can extract it from a running system. I know the key must be compressed away somewhere on the recovery partition, but it definitely is not obvious as to where (I believe the Jelly Bean software extracts the key from the registry). Anyways, I think I'll just wipe the old HD and sell it, and make an nLited bootable USB to reinstall on the new HD. I suppose I will just have to bite the bullet and deal with MS as far as activation.
