X60s - Rescue and Recovery problems

I updated the IBM/Lenovo software on my X60s recently. The programme that you use to create rescue and recovery discs now no longer starts up. Have tried removing and re-installing with no luck.

I need to prepare a set of recovery discs in case the worst happens. Have any others experienced this problem and if so how can you fix it?

Lenovo really seem to have screwed up previously bulletproof IBM software.

What version software did you upgrade from and to? I don't claim to be an expert... Some versions if you read the specs are not compatable. Strange but true... mjs

It was an automatic update, not something I did manually - is it safe to assume the automatic updates are compatible with your computer?!

The first thing I do when I buy a new ThinkPad is to make the rescue and recovery discs. It has been my experience, like yours, that once you add software or do an update that there is a potential risk of losing the R&R disc burning functionality. While I cannot say it applies in all cases, I can tell you that in my personal experience with over 10 new ThinkPads of my own that the R&R software is a one time use program. It's this way by license, so that one cannot just burn copy after copy of the OS and sell it, or give it away. Also, if my memory serves me correctly it states in the EULA that one must make discs immediately upon setting up the computer or risk losing that option.

If you look in Task Manager, is the process called "scheduler_proxy.exe" running when you try to use RnR? I'm not sure if all RnR versions even have that process, but anyway... I began having problems opening and/or running RnR 4.2 to do on-demand backups, then found that the above RnR process wasn't starting. But I could get the app to cooperate if I searched for and manually started that process by double clicking it. (Or, by checking it in msconfig startups and rebooting. Originally that had been one of the processes I unchecked, but it should have still kicked in on demand with the rest of the app.)

Have had the most reliable results after enabling that, as well as all TVT backup-related services in computer management (including TVT Scheduler, even tho I wouldn't be scheduling any backups), and booting fresh. App opens and works fine then, for both internal and burned imaging -- tho it can take quite awhile for the backup's progress bar to start moving.

If you're still in warranty, Lenovo would probably send you factory recovery discs at no charge under the circumstances. Or you can of course purchase them from Lenovo, and I may be mistaken but I think I may have read that they can be purchased for less in some area of this forum.

I would suggest that you call into Lenovo Tech Support and ask for a set of discs. I've had them ship them to me at no charge including shipping (in or out of warranty) simply because I was courteous and not demanding. Then if for some reason you get someone who is not so quick to offer them for free the cost is quite nominal compared to your time. Finally if you choose to find them here, be warned that each set is unique to your model type and serial number. They are not the same even for each model type. It depends on when your computer was assembled just which version of drivers etc that you have. Unlike some manufacturers who use rather generic ISO disc images with their name and standard bloatware load, Lenovo is much more specific and up to date (as of the build date of each computer). So take that into consideration. And example is if your computer has a ThinkPad wifi card or Intel wifi card the drivers would of course be different. IF you get discs with ThinkPad wifi drivers but you have Intel, then you are going to have a problem. This is the reason at the end of the day, it's so much easier to just call and get them even if you have to pay. I had a friend not too long ago that bought them, and they were only $35.00. Not bad considering they will save you hours of time not having to go on the web and download the drivers from the Lenovo site, as opposed to just popping in the discs and letting everything load automatically.
