X61 Screen Connector Cable

#1 Post by treker » Wed Sep 03, 2008 5:53 pm

On my new X61 I noticed that the screen connector cable is very much exposed due to the cutout in the screen bezel (frame). Is this cause for concern down the road? Is there a history of faulty intermittent screen cables in this line of compact laptops, like the X40/X60 series? I know it is a compact laptop and I treat it very carefully. It looks like it is going the way of the dinosaur...4:3 screens are dying quick. I never understood manufacturers forcing 16:9 widescreens down consumer's throats like the current wave. I prefer 4:3 in a small laptop...you just get more screen vertical real estate, all things being equal. I don't think the target audience of a 12 in screen is mainly to watch movies. They want to do email or browse the internet for the most part. And 4:3 gives more vertical space than 16:9. Okay...through rant.

But is the exposed cable going to be a problem in a few years?

I have X61s and I took my computer 3 times or was it 4 times for service. I had a vertical line on the left side of the screen, about the width of a 3 pixels. Each time they replaced the screen and one time before last they also replaces the invertor, the problem still came back after a month each time. Untill I insisted they replace the ribbon cable connecting the screen with the unit. And so far so good (touchwood).
