Fan Error! But fan works? Shouldn't Thinkpads be durable?

I searched all over about this problem and it seems quite prevalent. I bought a Thinkpad to last?

So I get the fan error upon boot up, which then shuts down the computer.

I opened it up and cleaned the fan, booted up, still got the error - but the fan starts fine!? So I press ESC after I get the beeps and error, the computer loads up and still the fan works fine?

I read some allusions to the fact that a 'fan error' message may mean a bad motherboard, a 'failing' fan, or a dead/dieing CMOS battery. Anyone know if these ideas are true? The X60 Tablet I have, I bought new like a year and a half or two ago. Why would the battery (or fan and motherboard) poop out so fast?

Is there a way for me to get rid of this fan error? I also read vague references to it being a BIOS problem, but it didn't make much sense?

Your questions is , can it "mean a bad motherboard, a 'failing' fan, or a dead/dieing CMOS battery"?. The answer is yes to the first two, and I don't know to the CMOS battery. The fan is cheaper to try, that's why it's the first recommended. Should have bought that 3 year warranty eh?
