My new hard drive has just been sitting here because for the life of me, I can't figure out what screw driver opens the hard drive door screw!

Anybody know what I need? Its the weird, shallow hexagon screw deal.

it should be a #1 phillips.

Definitely a Phillips on my X61t, but what the poster is describing is a Torx. You can find these in any hardware, auto parts, or electronics store, though getting one small enough is sometimes tricky.

No, that's what I assumed it would be (its what it was on my X60) but its something entirely different. Pic:

looks like an Allen key of the appropriate size might do the trick.

Torx it is

Mr. Ross had it right. That is definitely a Torx screw, most likely smaller than T10 (desktop hard drive covers usually use T9). Please put a pic warning in your thread subject line, thank you.

Interestingly, I just turned over the machine and it uses a normal Phillips for the HDD cover...

Yep, Ross was right on the money. For some reason, it never occurred to me. Busted out the allens wrench set and it came right open.

I thought it was strange too, but this is how it came from IBM.

Do I need a whitelisted/IBM branded drive to do the upgrade or I can just buy any 2.5" SATA drive and follow any of the hard drive guide out there?

I'm looking to upgrade to a 7200rpm drive.

Thanks,

David

Any 2.5" SATA drive should work. Given current pricing, you should be able to get a 200-300gb 7200rpm drive for less than $100 if you look around various internet retailers such as zipzoomfly.com, otherworld computing (a Mac shop but they generally have good deals on Hitachi 7200rpm drives with rebates), newegg, or any number of other sites. These drive deals come up regularly on internet deal sites such as slickdeals and fatwallet and techbargains, so have a look and you shall find.

I just installed a Seagate Momentus 7200rpm 320gb HD in my X61T. Works like a charm, very quick, and the HD shock active protection thingy still works. Got it for around $140 from Newegg including shipping. Highly recommended!
