Hard Drive Thrashing after Waking from Hibernate

This is now driving me absolutely crazy. I have an X61 with Vista, C2Duo 2.0GHz, 2GB w/ the 5400 80GB drive (it's over a year old now). Because a fresh boot takes so long, I usually put the system into hibernate. Trouble is, the hard drive thrashes for about 4 minutes after waking from hibernate. I tend to try and run my system quite cleanly - I have nothing in my startup folder, have used msconfig to remove unnecessary things and only run Dropbox and Google Calendar sync.
So my question: is there any way to reduce the amount of time until the system becomes usable and responsive after waking from hibernate? The system is so great otherwise - it's just such a frustration to get an idea etc. and then watching the hard drive thrash and the system chug along in an unusable state for a few minutes.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
