Hard drives for Thinkpad X61s

Question about hard drive on X61s:

1) IBM used to use Hitachi drives, but what does Lenovo use for Thinkpads now? Still Hitachi?

2) Will the recovery cd self created, re-create the hidden recovery partition on any 2.5" hard drive for Rescue and Recovery?

I'm thinking of instead of ordering the upgrade to 160GB from 80GB on a new X61s purchase to just buy it aftermarket. This guarantees me a 16MB buffer drive as well as making a clean nice install.

1.) Lenovo still uses Hitachi's. The HTS721010G9SA00 was used in X61S for example. It is a 100GB SATA drive.

2.) Yes

Thanks Harryc. Just to confirm, the hidden recovery partition will be re-created on ANY brand hard drive.

It used to be only re-created on Hitachi drives and only if it was completely clean.

Any drive that will work in the machine is capable of containing a recovery partition.

A few questions about hard drive features in the X61s?

1. I think the X61s uses a 2.5?"Hard drive. Is this correct?

2. Can any hard drive that has the right size and have SATA work with the X61s?

3. Is the free fall sensor built into the laptop or the hard drive? Meaning will any drive that fit into the laptop work with the free fall sensor (Active Protection System) feature?

Any 2.5" Laptop SATA hard drive will work. The sensor is built into the system board. There is at least one drive out there that has a sensor built into the drive as well.
