X61T freezing/crashing problem

So I've had my X61T for a few months now, and for the past few weeks I've noticed that (almost exclusively when on battery power), my system will crash every 1-2hrs, requiring a hard reboot. I usually only have the same programs open, Powerpoint, firefox, thunderbird, and AIM. I'm running Vista Ultimate, and have 4gbs RAM. when plugged in, I don't think this has ever happened. I tried messing with my power settings, but nothing is helping. It occurs are various times, I could just be checking email, browsing internet, switching slides in powerpoint, etc. It starts with 1 program freezing, then shortly after another, and then eventually Explorer.exe freezes as well and I have to hold down the power button to restart. I replaced the HD because I've been meaning to for a while, and did a fresh install of Vista Ultimate with only the necessity of drivers and programs. Same thing! I read about an MS Office/Vista 64bit problem, but am wondering if this problem is with Vista Ultimate as well?

any help much appreciated!

ps: do you all with the X61t notice that the laptop makes weird high-pitched noises when plugged in? Is htis normal? sounds like its caused by the power plug or something?

thanks!

That noise is 'CPU whine' and it's normal.
