new x61 noise and heat

#1 Post by alexap » Sat Nov 01, 2008 6:31 pm

hello,

i just got my new x61 probably one of the last sold direct from lenovo
i have now x60 and very happy with it especially 12' screen and size therefore wanted to keep same model before its going to disappear
unfortunately i have same problem described here many times

--heat - computer running hotter than my x60
--noise - fan running 90% of the time and much louder than x60, its not a big noise but since i like to work in quite environment its disturbing
--squeaking noise - fan running with very annoying noise

i want a new and faster pc, budget not a problem, but it must be quite and small footprint
should i send my x61 to repair or just leave it as its vaiste of time and order something from new models

by the way what will be the coolest and less noisy x200 or x200s which model?

please advice
thanks for you help
Alex

yes within 30 days, but i'm in Hungary and PC from US Lenovo so return will be complicated, i can always keep it for somebody in the office that can work in "noisy environment" :)

My x61 (3 weeks old) runs fairly cool. I rarely see temperatures above 42 degress during normal use but then I use Linux with a minimalist window manager.

The fan certainly is a little louder than my old x24 but I think it is normal.

Edit: Btw my BIOS version is 2.16

X61s are known to be generally a little louder than the equivalent X60, the BIOS seems to have a more aggressive fan control loop.

The squeaking noise certainly isn't normal, though, especially for a new machine. Probably needs a new fan.

Mine was also running the fan all the time..

Until I did the following:
Made a new power plan (with the Lenovo Power Manager), with the cpu speed set to automatic for both battery and plugged in. Now, it only runs the fan at low speeds, and it is quite a bit cooler.

I will agree with the post about using the Lenovo power management software. My X61 was imaged (with XP pro) by the corporate drones and hand no thinkvantage stuff at all, and the computer ran very hot with the fan at full blast.

I eventually got them to let me install the Power Manager and I created a profile that uses Adaptive power management (both on AC and battery), only using the CPU as much as needed. It doubled the battery duration, reduced the heat dramatically, and significantly reduced the fan noise.

The newest BIOS:

Version 7SET34WW (1.20)

* (Fix) Buzzing sound around the fan with battery.
