X61 Ram configuration

I was wondering, can the X61 accept a RAM configuration of 2.5GB?
If an x61 has 1GB RAM, can it be just 1 GB stick or 2 512MB sticks?
if the latter is also possible, must I throw away both sticks if I want to upgrade its RAM by 2GB?

Yes, Yes, Yes, and no.

Any combination of 1 or 2 sticks, 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB works. Matched pairs are a tiny bit faster.
