Got a crack in my bezel - what to do next?
Got a crack in my bezel - what to do next?
Hello,
I dropped my X60s a few days back and was wondering ever since, why my display has more play than I was used to.
Today I discovered a crack in the "upper left corner", going down from where the escape key ends to the bottom, "crossing" the cover of the fan.
This way, the crack pretty much separates the part the displays hinges rest on from the rest of the laptop's body. Every time I open the display now, the crack is being pulled apart.
What are my options now? Shall I leave it? Shall I glue it? How much will Lenovo charge me for replacing the Laptop's chassis? I called them today and apparently those cracks are not covered by my warranty.
Thanks very much for your time,
Martin

hi martin,
gluing wont help much..and look terrible!
sending it off to ibm will be quite a sum...
easiest way would be looking into the hardware maintenance manual and track down the fru numbers of the part needed.
once you have the parts i can simply help you replace it, or do it for you... ( i used to be a part-time technician working for an ibm certified dealer here near essen )
i dont know of an affordable dealer in berlin....
i am somewhat pressed for time, off skiing on friday... if desired, send me a pm, i will send you my cell number...or will contact you elsewise, if wanted )

EDIT:
re-reading your post i read its the base cover thats stuffed, not the lcd cover...
i dropped mine too a while ago, the fru for the base cover is 42w3231 and it was somewhere around 50 euros, if i remeber correctly..
i even got my broken one ( front left corner chipped ) right in front off me !)
if needed i could ask my contact to order one for you...

I'm guessing I have the same crack on my unit... as far as I know, it's been there for some time.
While the crack does expand slightly when the display is opened, it doesn't look like there's that much stress being put on it. Maybe this is because I've got the extended battery, which hugs the back side of the laptop.
I've thought about repairing it myself, I really don't think it would take much more than a little dab of good epoxy.
Here's a picture of the crack on mine:

Note from Admin: Not without a warning in the subject line, you don't.

Re: Got a crack in my bezel - what to do next?
The other day I applied a bit of epoxy to the crack, taped it up, and let it set.
While you can still see that there was a crack in the bezel, the repair seems secure... at least for the time being.
If one was careful to wipe off any excess before the adhesive sets, it would be hard to tell anything was wrong in the first place unless one's really looking carefully.
I'm not sure if the repeated opening and closing of the screen will cause it to come apart again, but so far, so good.

Another updated -
I just noticed the epoxy has failed. The product I used was a 7-minute plastic epoxy. I don't know what might do a better job.
