BROKEN? APS - TPshocks.exe - Thinkpad Active protection Sys

Thinkpad Active Protection isn't working.
I can see the process is there (TPshocks.exe) when I look in Windows task manager, but it doesn't seem to be working (no amount of jolting slows it down for a second). There's no icon on the task or system bars, so there's nothing I can see to adjust.
Any suggestions?
I tried re-installing it (getting the latest version from Lenovo) but no change. I'm sure it worked when I got the machine, but that was a long time ago....
I won't be surprised if I turned off some necessary associated process (I try to keep SERVICES.MSC lean). The machine otherwise works great.
