general question about batteries

hey guys..
i have a general question about batteries and i wanted to know if it could be done..
The thing is that as soon as i m back home for the day, i just
unplug the battery and connect it to my dock and external monitor and keyboard and its connected pretty much until the next day morning before leave for college..
but there is a rare case wherein i sometimes need to undock in the middle of the night, and take the laptop with me to other places of my house so that i can use it temporarily on battery supply..and dock it back..
the question is that, can i directly plug in my battery into my laptop when its running on AC power??!!!! i mean i might just need to take my laptop with me for a few minutes and i really dont prefer switching it off and then connecting the battery and then switching it on..i mean the whole process is tedious..
