Is it possible to replace a LCD without separating the top?

I have an X60 (1709-GDJ), and its LCD has some scratches. So, I am thinking of replacing it. I understand that the normal procedure is to remove the upper part (LCD/LCD cover) from the bottom, by removing the keyboard, the keyboard bezel, etc, etc. I once replaced the LCD top cover, and it is very time comsumming. So, I am wondering if one can replace the LCD simply by removing the LCD bezel and the hinges (and some other stuff, of course) while the upper part is still connected to the bottom. This would save a lot of time. Looking at the maintenance manual, it may be possible, but I am not sure.... Has someone replaced a LCD without removing the upper part?

You won't be able to unhook the upper portion of the machine with the hinges still at the bottom, and by the time you remove everything needed to unhook the hinges, you're 90% done...

Thanks. Well, I thought that maybe that, while leaving the hinges in the bottom slots, by removing the side screws fixing the hinges to the LCD (+ some other stuff like the inverter card, the bluetooth module), and after disconnecting the LCD cable, one could slide the LCD out.....

It's possible to do, but certainly not the preferred way to do it. It's tricky because the hinges actually extend up and are screwed into the sides of the LCD housing. While you are balancing all the pieces to get it apart (and back together) you have to deal with Wifi wire routing, bluetooth, LCD and inverter cabling, thinklights, etc. It's just a much mellower experience with the entire LCD assembly off of the machine. You can drink a cup of coffee with your free hand

Thank you. I think I will remove, as you suggested, the LCD assembly before remplacing the LCD, as soon as I find a LCD at a good price.

I replace them while attached, but I've done a lot of them. If you don't have a lot of experience, it is too easy to break something.

Well, I sourced a refurbished LCD for a good price, and I installed it. To do this, I detached the LCD assembley as suggested. The procedure took about 2 hours, as this was the first time I replaced the LCD in an X60. I think it would have been very difficult if I had not detached the LCD assembly from the base, because there are many pieces of adhesive tape fixing the LCD which I had to remove and re-use. Thank you for your advice.
