same for my X60s..
i think the GPU isn under there and it works hard..
i would not worry until the palmrest starts melting..
by the time your warranty runs out refurb and new parts will be cheap and with the hardware manuals available these things are easy to repain and mod into frankenpads..
hmm..
maybe we need a "frankenpad" confrence here.. ?

hmmm the idea is pretty nice
but u know its still funny why it runs cooler in xp in comparision to vista
i have even noticed that when in comparision to ubuntu...its runs quite hot like in vista even in ubuntu
do u see any pattern!??? or shall i ask for any replacement!??
and regarding the conf on frankenpads maybe we should have one..how about a poll!???maybe users come together and discuss u knw

The right hand palm rest is where the mini-PCIe slots are -- the WLAN and WWAN (if optioned) cards. These can get warm when in use, and that heat transfers to the palm rest. This is a common thing and both X60s machines I've used exhibited this to some extent. I believe the Intel cards stay cooler than the Atheros ones. In the X61 models with WWAN, there is a small secondary fan to help dissipate the heat generated by the two cards.
My first thought would be to check the power saving settings for your wireless network adapter; maybe the Vista drivers default to a slightly more power hungry configuration?
The left palm rest has a big void for the PC Card slot; I think the chipset (with integrated GPU) is located towards the back of the case, closer to the fan and air vents.
