How important is it to replace the nylon screws?

#1 Post by michaelhoffman » Sat Jan 10, 2009 9:39 pm

The Hardware Maintenance Manual for my X61 warns against reusing the nylon screws, saying that they must be replaced each time. Is this actually important? I am just trying to add a new stick of RAM to my laptop.

the screws can be reused quite a few times before the retaining compound wears off.

besides, the DIMM cover screws don't have any compound on them and actually don't apply to what you've read. ;)

eventually the nylon retaining compound will wear out.   i've removed/installed the same 10 screws on my X61s at least a dozen times so far and haven't had a single issue.

i wouldn't worry about it.

That is what I thought, but it is kind of weird. Thanks!

The only ones I worry about are the ones holding down the cooling fan
