The Hardware Maintenance Manual for my X61 warns against reusing the nylon screws, saying that they must be replaced each time. Is this actually important? I am just trying to add a new stick of RAM to my laptop.

the screws can be reused quite a few times before the retaining compound wears off.
besides, the DIMM cover screws don't have any compound on them and actually don't apply to what you've read.

eventually the nylon retaining compound will wear out. i've removed/installed the same 10 screws on my X61s at least a dozen times so far and haven't had a single issue.
i wouldn't worry about it.

That is what I thought, but it is kind of weird. Thanks!

The only ones I worry about are the ones holding down the cooling fan
