Is there any fan noise problems with X61?

#1 Post by Danster » Wed Jan 14, 2009 3:11 am

Hi there guys!

Im thinking about selling my T43 and getting myself a X61. But do you have any problems with fan noise on your X61?

And is some of the X61 models I shouldn't buy?

Kind regards

Some folks in these forums are incredibly sensitive to fan noise; I don't consider myself to be especially affected by it.

With that caveat, I've never been annoyed by my X61. I can't even recall whether it tends to be running a lot or just a little; it just isn't intrusive. Whatever noise there is seems to be a non-intrusive frequency/tonality. (I'm awaiting scads of contrary responses )

I can't offer any insight on model preferences, as this is the only X61 I've encountered. If you can live with 1024x768 resolution - which I think is marginal these days - my 7675-CTR has seemed a solid machine and certainly meets my needs and expectations.

X61 units (especially with a wireless "n" card installed) have a bad history of heat issues. Try to acquire one with WWAN, since these came with 2 fans instead of one.

Good luck.

That should read "especially with an Atheros wireless "n" card installed". The Intel 4965AGN cards do not cause any heat issues in an X61.

even sometimes with the intel cards if the drivers are sometimes "mal functional" or whatever that is, sometimes heat is kind of a small issue in the x61 models..i mean when i had a x61 with xp there was no issue, and when i had vista ultimate x64 version, the palm rest gets quite hot u know..well again like i said, it depends on quite a few factors and the previous posts all together should give you an insight of what to do and what not to do..

Got an x61 with the Intel AGN card and no WWAN but the machine came with 2 fans. Fans are very quiet, quieter than those on the T61 I had before getting this little wonder.

Love the x61!! :thumbs-UP:

I've got the Intel 4965AGN, and while I haven't got heat issues per se, my fan is always running when I'm on the socket. I find it a little annoying, but I've learned to live with it.

Not sure if I have the two fans or not, but I don't have any real problems with the sound, and I am pretty picky. fancontrol works well on it though, I use that when I am doing a lot of CPU intensive work.
