Higher resolution has in general some negative impact on battery life.

websites -> open your bookmarks on the left side, thus you can get the website viewed more or less in 4:3 aspect ratio
pdfs -> adjust the zoom or use left pane for table of contents
document writing -> use LaTeX with an editor with an advanced GUI like TeXnicCenter, it makes good use of the additional space on the left while the document is displayed in 4:3; as for word adjust the zoom factor and the fonts size

I know those are not really a solution but make life a bit easier :D

Some of people in South Korea made their x6 series SXGA.

"Leokim" who is an expert in modifying and remodeling of the lcd (such as UXGA on 14.1'' model, QXGA on 15.1'' model, etc) made it possible using SXGA on X6, X3, and X4 series.
I would do that when I come back to Korean this summer. But it costs about $350 to do the replacement.
