Protective sleeve on eBay

#1 Post by rickster21 » Tue Feb 10, 2009 4:59 pm

Hi everyone, first post here.
Has anyone bought one of these?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0154402774
or
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0101770349
They look pretty cool, but I'm curious as to what protection they would have if dropped.
Thanks!

I have one that looks similar to the 1st one. For keeping the PC in another backpack.

I probably don't have the expertise to say it in qualitative terms, but I would say it's not comparable to those like ZeroShock, which I have one as well.

You can get BuiltNY sleeves for about the same price if you look around. (I found one at a local Apple reseller for $15.)

The 12" one will fit the X6x series with 4-cell battery and the 13" will fit the 8-cell models.

I can see that the "Built NY 12i" and the "ZeroShock" sleeves are obviously better than anything I've seen on eBay.
My question now is, which one of the two is the best bet?

I have the second one. I use it for carrying my thinkpad x41 and x60 in my regular school backpack. My backpack does have a pocket that fits a laptop but it doesn't provide much protection. The sleeve above only good for protecting the laptop from getting scratches. It wells thinkpad x series wtih 4cell battery well. Will fit an x60 with 8 cell battery if u push hard enough.

You said, "if you push hard enough"... I don't like the sound of that. I'm looking for a sleeve for my x61 8-cell tablet, and this one is interesting, but I don't want to scratch it or anything by trying to get the zipper around it...

I agree, I wouldn't want to force it into anything, much less have it loose inside a sleeve. I'm looking for something to protect my x60s w/8cell, inside my backpack. I'm liking the "Built NY 12i" and "ZeroShock" sleeves, but am still holding out for the better of the two.

I already have a scratch on mine. Put it in a standard laptop case and it appeared out of nowhere  And I just got it... Man that's frustrating.

Anywho, hopefully someone drops by with some sage advice...

The BuiltNY 12" is too small. With the 8-cell protrusion you no longer have a 12" notebook as far as overall size is concerned. Go for the next size up.
much less have it loose inside a sleeve.
That's not an issue. The outside surface of your ThinkPad is rubberized and the inside lining of the sleeve is somewhat rough so sliding isn't an issue. I imagine the inside of the ZeroShock is similar.

Somewhat rough? I'm not sure I'd want that. O_o

BTW, it's somewhat difficult to find a sleeve/bag that fits the X4x and X6x Tablets with 8-cell batteries, and the first one linked by the thread starter does fit.

The inside lining is made of some sort of synthetic cloth. It's certainly not smooth as silk but it's soft. It won't scratch the ThinkPad, however when in contact with the rubberized externals will tend to hold the unit in place.

Also from the dimensions of sleeves that I've seen posted on the web, they're all intended for widescreen models so they're all longer than they need to be. You might be able to fit the AC adapter inside the sleeve. If you do so, I'd put the adapter in a small plastic or cloth bag first so it doesn't scratch the ThinkPad.

I have the zipper sleeve. It fits my X61s with the 8 cell very snugly. The problem I've faced with this sleeve is that the zipper is of poor quality and will break. Also, the black material can get dirty easily so it'll need a wash. Otherwise, it works well enough and provides minimal extra protection to the laptop.

Overall OK

yes, the 9mm SSD fits in the X220

I have the second one, it fits my x61 with the 8cell battery and provides basic scratch protection... and that's about it. The padding is not very thick and has little rigidity to it. Its good for putting the laptop into another bag or backpack but its still susceptible to being dropped or crushed. For the price though its kinda cool, it has the thinkpad logo!

ditto previous poster ....I have the 2nd one and it really just protects against scratches. Great if you need to grab and run and you want something to protect the lid. I also like to throw it in my backpack, keeps the crumbs and lint out of the keyboard.
Fits the 4 cell battery perfectly and the 8 cell you need to stretch the sleeve slightly and in it pops. no fuss no muss.
For $5 bucks ,,,,ummmmmmm  forgo a Starbucks joe for a day and you got yourself a cheap sleeve.

Oh and now that you mention it, I think I will order another for my lappie. The wife likes hers just fine.
