computer shuts off automatically (no warning)

And when I say "shutdown" I don't mean the Windows XP normal shutdown routine. I mean I get a black screen and the computer is off. This is for a Lenovo x60.

At first I thought this was an overheating issue. I downloaded a program to monitor the CPU temp and it looks like I'm normally in the 70s (celsius) but can get up to 80s. So maybe there is something to the overheating problem.

I've taken out the battery (connecting directly to A/C power) and have positioned the laptop in a way where it, I think, can get a bit more circulation (the back is raised a bit off my desk). I also downloaded the latest BIOS and installed that as well through ThinkVantage System Update. We'll see if that helps. I haven't had the machine turn off since those two moves, but it has only been a couple of hours.

Does this sound like an overheating issue to you folks? Thanks!

I vote yes. Do you still have warranty remaining? If so, this is the time to use it.

I do have the warranty still. The only problem is that this is a very bad time to be without my laptop for a few days.. hmm.

Does anyone have the support number handy? Thanks!

I've had the same overheating symptoms on a T42. It is the thermal management in the CPU chip. Usually bad heat sink mounting or dead fan. Send it in under warranty.
