Blank external display

I have my X60 connected to an external display using a VGA to DVI-I cable connected to the VGA port on the dock. When I boot into Win XP it displays the correct screen/resolution for about 2 seconds than switches to a resolution which is not supported by my display (it says "Unsupported Resolution). I then must force a power down. The only way I can get it to display a somewhat usable sceen is to force VGA mode at boot time by pressing the F8 key. When it is up in VGA mode I can then change the resolution to what I need. The problem is, that the next time I boot it will not keep my selected resolution. I tried settinmg the resolution to VGA but that does not work either.
I tried setting Presentation Manager to force the resolution change but it says there is no external monitor attached. This is incorrect since I am acually working via the external monitor. It seems that it is trying to force the resolution to the built-in screen, which is not on since the lid is closed.
Anyone have any clues as to what is going on here? FYI, I have Vista Business installed on the same computer via dual boot and Vista does not have this issue.
