Use your Ultrabay CD drive in an external case -- possible?

#1 Post by PhilipGabler » Sun Feb 22, 2009 10:13 am

Hello everyone,

I'm a long-time Thinkpad admirer and have finally made the crucial step and actually purchased one (a used X61).

The package included an Ultrabase (which will yet need to prove useful to me) and a CD/DVD drive for this Ultrabase (not the multidrive capable of burning DVDs). Given that the Ultrabase is somewhat large, I was considering to buy an external CD drive (used via USB).

There is an abundance of these drives on offer on the web, but I am not sure about the quality (longevity doesn't seem to be their strongest suit). I was hence wondering whether anyone of you has heard of external cases for Lenovo's Ultrabase CD drives. In other words, something like the cases for 2.5/3.5 inch hard drives allowing you to build your own external hard drives -- only this time for CD drives.

Many thanks for any replies!

I have never tried this case ... but I did see it on EBay UK as well.

There's also the option of a UltraBay Slim to USB adapter. An example of that one on ebay is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0089420633

Excellent -- Harryc's suggestion was exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks to both of you for your helpful replies!
