X61s -- Trying to use the fingerprint reader in XP

#1 Post by virge » Sat Mar 07, 2009 12:12 am

I'm setting up the X61s I recently received. It has a built in fingerprint reader but I'm having trouble getting it set up. This is a 7666-CTO machine.

The laptop is currently running Windows XP Professional SP3 and has ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software version 5.8.2. The Amtel TPM device shows up in the hardware profiles with no errors. I looked through the BIOS settings and didn't see anything related to the fingerprint reader.

The problem is that when I go to enroll fingerprints, I get an error message saying that the fingerprint reader isn't detected. "Cannot enroll user. Cannot find fingerprint sensor device." Has anyone run into this before?
Current Thinkpads: 600E, 600X, 701C, A31 (Flexview), R51 (Flexview), R60, T42P (Flexview), TR50E, T60 (Flexview), X61s (Ultralight), Z61m (Ti) Non-Thinkpad: Toshiba 100ct

i haven't experienced this problem on any of my ThinkPads (including X61s).

are you sure there is nothing in the BIOS? should be an entry allowing you to enable/disable fingerprint reader.

Andy, I think you also need CSS installed and activated in BIOS.

I've looked through the BIOS and I don't see anything related to the fingerprint scanner. I don't have CSS installed though. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not using the recovery discs so its kind of trial-and-error trying to get everything working!

look in device manager --> "Biometric" there should be: TouchChip Fingerprint something....
if its not there, download and reinstall drivers/software for the fingerprint reader
check for new bios and/check bios settings
if this wont fix the problem check the hardware by removing the keyboard and make sure the if the zif-connector fits correctly.

If there is no mention in the bios, (under security tab) it doesn't recognize the hardware. It might be unplugged.

I put this issue off for a while, but now that I'm replacing the defective HDD (under warranty though. :D) with a SSD, I decided to look into it further.

You guys were right-- the fingerprint reader was disconnected for some reason. :??: The cable was there, and it was sitting on top of the socket.. just wasn't pushed in. A belated thanks for your help. :thumbs-UP:
