x61 7676-A11 new systemboard needed

#1 Post by gbernard » Wed Mar 11, 2009 1:32 pm

Hi, just sharing, my x61 7676-A11 my ninth thinkpad, has started just cutting out, with the battery alone, with AC alone (battery removed) with both battery & AC connected.

It just stops, no LED's, warnings etc . . and can only be restarted by removing the battery and the ac, then replacing/reseating and powering on.

Happens 7-8 times a day, official diagnosis from lenovo, is a power short of some kind on the system board, that will need replacing.

Anyone else experienced this ?

Yes...sounds like you have a dead battery. Try a new battery and the problem may go away. Does the battery gauge show red?

Good luck...Bill

I think the Lenovo diagnosis (or at least their proposed solution) is correct. If it were the battery that would not effect how the machine would run with the battery removed, which the system should be able to do as long as there is current flowing in through the AC adapter.

It could be anything...but since I just went through this problem with my X60, I will tell the story. If the battery is dead enough it is possible that the ThinkPad can quit while connected to the AC adapter. When I replaced the dead battery with a new battery it charged up and ran perfect after that.

Just my two cents...Bill

When you had the dead battery did you try to run the thinkpad without any battery, as the OP reports that he did, with the same problem? I can believe that a very dead/defective battery could cause problems for the system when in place. What I have trouble with is the idea that once this battery was removed from the system, and the system was booted up with NO battery in place, that this dead battery would somehow have an effect. Thinkpads can be run with no battery in place, running solely off of the AC adapter, and in that condition there is no way that a battery that is not connected to the system could have any effect on the system, whatsoever.

Yes...I agree with you on running without the battery. But, in the case of my X60...it would intermittantly stop after about 20 -40 minutes without the battery plugged in. I thought it was the motherboard or processor causing the problem. But, when I replaced the battery everything went to "normal". That was after removing every single internal plug-in card to see if they were causing the problem.

I did not do any further testing like other power adpaters, check the power connections, etc...I just figured it was the defective battery. The X60 works fine now. I simply made the suggestion to suspect the battery. Not all problems are solved as easy as mine...I guess that is why they call it "trouble shooting".

It would be great to find out the final solution. Regards and good luck to solving the problem...Bill

system board replaced, all good, technician says he has had 2 other instances of a short in the power area of the 7676-a11 systemboard.

the only glitch I have ever had with my now 11th thinkpad over 12 years !

onsite warranty is the best !
