x60 shuts down on boot after BIOS logo

Hi,
I have an x60 1709-gdj which on boot dies right after the BIOS screen. The Thinkpad logo flashes on the screen, then I see some distortion on the right hand of the screen and it shuts off. I can't get into the BIOS using the ThinkVantage button, and have tried swapping memory modules. The only way to get it to restart is unplug the power with the battery disconnected.
There are two related factors: when in a restaurant a week ago a waiter spilled beer on the table; some got under the computer, though it worked ok for a week afterward so I thought it was unaffected (there are no signs of internal exposure). The morning the computer stopped working, the battery didn't seem to register properly, though it was ok after starting off AC.
I'd rather not buy a new computer now. I have taken the computer apart but nothing is obviously wrong, and I did disconnect the CMOS battery for a minute. Does anyone know what the shutdown right after BIOS means, and have any suggestions?
Thanks!

There are lots of x60 on market who still have warranty left.Lookup your serial number and check on lenovo.com if your x60 is in warranty.

Unfortunately it is not still under warranty. I'm guessing the costs to have it repaired (or even an estimate) would not be sensible.

FYI ThinkVantage button upon boot leads to Rescue&rRecovery predesktop area. To access BIOS you need to press F1.

I'd try to get most out of your notebook and buy a new used one. I'd ask on marketplace forum what your parts are worth. You get a used x60 for around 600 $.

OK, when I press f1 on bootup I do see "entering BIOS utility," but then I get the strange screen distortion and it shuts off.
I find it strange the battery lamp doesn't light up when a charged battery is plugged in. Another data point is I am using a third party extended battery (the original lasted less than a year, and they were out of stock when I needed a new one), but it hasn't caused me any problems so far. If I plug the original battery in I see the same problems.

You don't need much liquid to short something out, although it is possible the spill was not related to your problem. Did you look under the motherboard?

While I was messing around with it last night, it booted once, though it wouldn't boot again.
I took the bottom off just now and didn't notice any signs of spills, shorts, etc. But now when I apply power, it boots! It works off AC or battery. ** it won't boot or see the battery until AC is plugged in. Once it is booted, I can disconnect AC and it continues operating, but I have to plug it to start it. **
I have now gone from having a computer that won't boot, to one that is unreliable (cosmic rays?).
It would help to know what a shut down right after the BIOS logo screen means. It did have some intermittent power issues with the original battery (wouldn't always boot, yes I should have gotten it repaired under warranty but the problem went away) so I think there is a marginal chip or connection. Are there known issues I could look into? It seems power related to me (internal - I have two power adapters and have used both), but I'm guessing.
Thanks.

I had similar symptoms to a T41 (shuts after ibm logo).
I changed the keybord and now works fine. I think it was a power button's problem.
You have to find an other keybord and try.

It is definitely a power problem. For example, I notice it turns itself on when I unplug the unit! Very weird. But I don't think it would be practical for me to try swapping out components, I don't have access to spares for one thing and it would be time consuming. I will have to try to live with it (plugging it in when I first want to turn it on, and hoping it doesn't completely die again) until Lenovo has a really good sale.
