How to install wwan in x61s
How to install wwan in x61s
Dear All.
Ive recentely bought the sierra wireless mc8775 card to install in my thinkpad x61s, and i am now trying to install it.
I have the x61s version which isnt wwan ready, meaning that the antenna isnt installed.
After alot of reading, it seems that i have to buy one and install it in to the lcd bezel.
But my question is now, is there somehow i can just buy somekind of a flat antenna, and install it somewhere in the main unit (meaning not the screen) so i wont have to disamble the screen?
Yours sincerely Rune D

Re: How to install wwan in x61s
I installed WWAN intennas in mine 2 days ago. Its not really that hard to install the correct ones. Once guy on here used the 3rd LAN antenna and installed 2 aux WWAN antennas (1 for the WWAN and 1 to replace the 3rd LAN antenna) and reports good results. Unfortunatley not all X61s have 3 LAN antennas. If you have one of the X61s models produced in the last few months, you probably will not unless it had the 802.11 n card installed.
The parts diagrams are confusing. You only need 1 part number: 93P4542
That includes the extendable antenna for the LCD cover and the secondary antenna for under the palm rest.

Re: How to install wwan in x61s
Here is a more basic question: Do you have the second slot on the motherboard for the WWAN card? Not all the motherboards have them
Re: How to install wwan in x61s
Yes the extra pcie slot is there, so all i need is the info regarding wheter or not it is a lasting solution, to just install wifi antenna under the plam rest, instead of having to buy wwan antenna, and disamble the screen brezel.
Re: How to install wwan in x61s
I am sure it would work. Like I mentioned, there is a guy who used an existing LAN antenna for his WWAN and reports good results.
I think if you want the best performance, you will need the proper antenna for the frequencies of the WWAN.
That being said, the secondary antennas for the X61s is under the palm rest and on the T60 it is under to top of the keyboard, so I am sure it will work.
Let us know how it works.

Re: How to install wwan in x61s
Hey,
Before i begin, do u have a sim-holder in ur ntb? it should be next to ur rams...
im the one who installed his wwan card using one wlan antenna and one palmrest wwan antenna and it still works great.
But i have to say that theres not much space in x61s to install a whole wlan-antenna under the palmrest... or if with bad signal strength!
What u could do is to buy one antenna kitt and use the small green antenna shown on the picture, so that u have 2 antennas in ur palmrest, this should work i guess...
i bought mine at a thinkvantage point, shouldnt be that hard to find one:
just use google and search for "thinkvantage point typeyourcityhere"
Partnumber for the antennas i used is 93P4388 i paid 25€.
Have a look at this post:

Re: How to install wwan in x61s
Hi Sportler2k3,
Yes, I do have sim holder.
actually I am running GTM378 with my laptop right now with some apple antenna I got it from ebay. I got quite good reception with this antenna. I just thinking to get the original antenna.
I contacted lenovo service part department and asked them for the antenna kit FRU# 93P4543.
It cost about $31 with $10 extra for shipping.
I am wondering, Is this antenna part enough to be used with my laptop or I have also need to order Rod antenna FRU# 42X3939, because if I take a look from Lenovo website (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 914.html#5), item number six looks like the antenna itself.
hope you can help me.
thanks
