X61 Tablet hangs for 20 sec when switching sreen orientation

I'm having an annoying problem with my X61 Tablet (Vista 32):

Sometimes, when I rotate the screen into tablet mode, the system freezes for about 20-30 seconds. No mouse cursor, no response to keyboard or pen. However, after the freeze, suddenly the screen will change orientation and everything will be back to normal.

I think the problem is more pronounced after waking from sleep mode.

Has anyone else encountered this? Any ideas for a solution?

Does the hang occur if you rotate the screen manually by pressing the rotation button on the tablet bezel? If not, suspect the Lenovo Tablet Shortcut app, which controls auto screen rotation, as the culprit. You could uninstall the app as a test to see it it has anything to do with the problem.
