Slow video stream Speed
Slow video stream Speed
Hi all,
I have a problem for my internet video streaming speed with my Lenovo X61t. I am getting very slow video stream speeds (about 80 kilobytes/s of download) using my home wifi connection, but I'm getting about 300 kilobytes/s with my desktop wifi connection to the same router.
I placed my laptop and my computer next to my wifi router and tested with the same video sites. Also, my LAN file transfer speed from my X61t to the desktop is about 3.0 megabyte/s. So this couldn't be my LAN problem... and I was able to download at 350 kilobytes/s+ from the Lenovo driver download website with my X61t using wifi... has anyone experienced it?

Re: Slow video stream Speed
Check the various power profiles (both in Lenovo Power Manager and windows built-in power options (for Vista)), your wifi may be working in very power saving mode.
IBM Lenovo Z61p | 15.4'' WUXGA | Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 2x 2.16GHz | 4 GB Kingston HyperX | Hitachi 7K500 500 GB + WD 1TB (USB) | ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 | ThinkPad Atheros a/b/g | Analog Devices AD1981HD | Win 7 x86 + ArchLinux 2009.08 x64 (number crunching)
Re: Slow video stream Speed
I am on the "Maximum Performance" profile when I did the tests... still so clueless why.
My wifi download speed on my x61t is still high and consistent.

Re: Slow video stream Speed
Also set it to max performance within wlan driver settings...
Re: Slow video stream Speed
I guess this is rather not the reason here as the machine is enjoying "high and consistent" download speeds.beGi wrote:Also set it to max performance within wlan driver settings...
To rule out or confirm OS, the OP might want to try out some Linux LiveCD.

Re: Slow video stream Speed
I have the same problem with my X61t. Download speeds are fine, but streaming video from some sites is very stuttery when compared with the other three ThinkPads (including a T23 with an 802.11b pcmcia net card!) in the room on the same sites. This is true under both Vista and Linux.
Re: Slow video stream Speed
Fixed my problem... happens to be Vista allows to choose power options for the wifi card.
[Solution]
--> Left click on battery button in the sys tray (the one beside the clock)
--> More Power Options
--> Go to the plan you're on... and click "Change Plan Settings"
--> "Changed advanced power settings"
--> "Wireless Adapter Settings"
--> "Power Savings Mode"
--> Choose "Maximum Performance" for On Battery/Plugged in
Hope this helps...

Re: Slow video stream Speed
A belated thanks, helped on the X61T I just got.
Still not getting great video performance watching YouTube or Hulu, there is some "breaking"/"stuttering", especially visible in full screen, guess it's the video card...hum, thought that would be a big improvement over my X31, guess not

Re: Slow video stream Speed
I would bet that the stuttering video is not your video card but a problem with the speed of your wifi/LAN connection. Youtube and Hulu stream video inside a Flash Video format container. Full screen video in this format requires ALOT of bandwidth. Sometimes, I get stuttering even when I'm using a wired connection. But if you download the file separately (using a service like KeepVid or whatever), and then play the FLV file from your hard drive, I would be surprised if you still have stuttering. I can play 1080p FLV files without stuttering direct from my hard drive, but I get stuttering during streaming as soon as I reach 480p.

Re: Slow video stream Speed
That's interesting, my download speed is around 12Mbps and a set wireless to maximum performance in the Vista setting, but I'll definitely give it a try. Watching 720p videos recorded with my Digicam using CCCP (Mediaplayer Classic + codecs) they play fine as long as I play them at native resolution. If I go to full screen (not a big difference from 720 to 768) the banding is quite visible, a bit odd, don't remember that problem on my X31 (using lower res of course).
I ran the Lenovo tools and everything is up to date.
