Well, I got my X61s and I’m very happy with it! Although it’s an older model, (965 Express video card), I have to say it’s in quite excellent shape. LCD is in pristine condition and there are no scratches anywhere on the body.
The unit came with Bluetooth, and WWAN, so as anticipated… HEAT is definitely present! I ended up pulling the WWAN card (for now) and it made a big difference. Still, with the wireless card installed (Intel), there is heat under the right side… not too bad though, but surely warmer than either of my X31’s.
The unit also came with Vista Business, but I promptly dumped it! I did spend quite a few hours working with it to try to make it usable, but as things go, I still couldn’t stand it! I’ve had a lot of experience with Vista machines, and for the life of me, I will never understand who MS was thinking of when they developed it… certainly, not power users. I did make sure to image the drive with Acronis before dumping Vista though… just in case.
I’m also here to confirm that the XP recovery disks from a T61 will recover an X61s with no problems. After the install, I downloaded and installed the ACHI utility, and the laptop is running just great with ACHI enabled.
One thing though… the Bios is currently at 1.11. I realize the current bios is up to 2.20, but I can’t tell if it will help anything on this laptop. Everything is running smooth with no problems so I’m reluctant to update. I’ve read up on all the rev changes, but none of the issues the new bios’ fixed have shown up on this machine. I’ve been working computers for years, and the one thing I’ve learned… “don’t fix it if it aint broke”! However, if anyone knows of anything I should be concerned with, please let me know. TIA!
Oh, I also threw on a Leather Skin from SGP (same as khtse did... http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=69472) SGP is located in downtown LA, Ca, so it was just a short trip to pick it up from them in person… $20 cash out the door. The skin I got is the new “black” version that wasn’t even on their website the day I picked it up. I was actually lucky they mentioned it as I had all intentions to just get the dark grey. SGP actually cuts the skin out in their office on some machine they have. Pretty cool! In any case, the skin matches the laptop perfectly and being black is a PLUS! It’s very nice! If anyone wants photos, let me know and I’ll post some.
Anyways, I'm think I'm going to enjoy this X61s!
