8-cell charging temperature
8-cell charging temperature
Hi,
After not using it for a while I started charging my 8-cell in my x60s. At ~60%charged I touched the battery and almost burnt myself. The only thermometer at hand toped out at 45 °C (~120F), and the battery was hotter.
I took the battery out to cool down for an hour, but it got hot gain after continuing to charge.
The Battery is not affected by the recall.
The battery was deep discharged (error code and shutdown at startuo) before loading.
It seems to be an original part, but I got is "used" from someone who mixed up the x60t and x60 battereis while ordereing.
would you continue using this battery?
Did you observed this as well?
Thanks!

Re: 8-cell charging temperature
At least long enough to open the Lenovo Battery MaxiMiser program and check the battery's details: cycle count, present max capacity, design capacity, manufacturing date, etc. What you describe is not normal; still, it may be interesting and illuminating to read "the report".schmaud wrote:would you continue using this battery?
Re: 8-cell charging temperature
Sony, used since 07/07, manufactures 05/07, 127 cycles.
strange is that design capacity total capacity is identical.
Furthermore oes the system show a 20% drop during discharge around 30% remaining capacity... but this is already a few month like this.
cheers

Re: 8-cell charging temperature
The 20% drop you mention is characteristic of a LiIon cell failure or going bad. I agree that it is strange that after 127 cycles and two years (... and probably not stored in optimal conditions) total capacity = design capacity. I would expect something around 50%, and certainly nothing close to 100%.
Back to answering your original question: If the battery temperature is as hot as you described, then I would discontinue use of that battery. That's no "loss" since, at temperatures as high as you state, LiIon battery life can be measured in days, not months.

Re: 8-cell charging temperature
OK, after being charged again, the battery started to behave normal. I will watch it, and if the effect resurfaces I will call lenovo.. The battery is out of warranty, but the computer is still in. I was surprised before with their service, so in the worst case it is a wasted phone call.
thanks
