Ultrabase X6 not recognizing USB or optical drive

Folks:
Having a bit of an issue -
Have an X61 here with an Ultrabase X6, for some reason the optical drive and the USB ports are not recognized nor functional.
Am I looking at a defective ultrabase, missing drivers, or a hardware failure?

It is NOT missing drivers.

Most likely hardware errors, then?

If you unplug all USB devices, and then can see your optical drive (after power off / power on), then you got a very old Ultrabase. There have been a number of "engineering changes" to solve some USB issues in the Ultrabase since the first one was produced.
