Thinkpad X61 sudden shut down

Hello,

I have a one year old X61 laptop. The laptop has been working fine till recently. I have been leaving my laptop on 24/7 in the last couple of months. Then, in the last week or so the laptop started to suddenly shut down. No warning, no blue screen, nothing. Complete shut down. When this happens I lose everything I have been doing, which is kind of frustrating. So, I downloaded TPMontior to check the CPU temperature. The temperature is usually between 60 - 80, when I am not working on the laptop. I took the laptop for the authorized Lenovo distributer for repair. They checked the laptop without the hard disc; I requested to take it out because I didn’t want to format the laptop. They said that there is nothing wrong with the laptop. They told me they want to check the laptop with the hard disc.

So, what do think the problem is? Is it the fan or the hard disc? What action do you suggest that I should take?

I should mention that I don’t have warranty.

Many thanks, :D

80 is REALLY hot at idle. If you feel comfortible working on it yourself, the first thing I would try is to remove the fan and refresh the thermal grease. Certainly, if you take the machine to the dealer with the disk in, get a good backup first.

I have a similar problem, my x61 7673-65U shuts down (sometimes resets) randomly when I'm on Windows XP.

What's more curious is that it doesn't happen too much when I'm only with AC power, and when the laptop has been turned on for more than 15 minutes (I think because it's warmer).

I haven't tried to solve this because I mainly run Linux, but it would be interesting to find it out (specially when I play games).

Cheers!

It turned out to be a software problem. We formatted the machine and everything is good now.

Try to login as another user and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you know you too have a software issue.

Best,
