I have X61s and am looking to enhance performance on the system. I have 4GB HyperX Ram in the machine which did improve the performance significantly over the factory 1GB that it came with.

I dont transfer large files, except after clean install copying my pictures and stuff. Although, if I install SSD, ill keep the images on secondary drive.

My main question is if X61s will show me significant improvement over the stock 7200 RPM ? Would it be worth it ? Battery life is not my primary concern.

i just replaced the 7200 rpm drive in my X61s Vista Business 32 machine with an Intel X25 80 GB SSD drive. i did this knowing that the X61s capability is limited to below SATA-I specs. i made a backup image of the old drive and restored to the new drive.

i haven't used this configuration extensively yet, but enough to make the following observations: boot time is slightly faster, barely noticeable improvement. applications start a little faster, the difference is noticeable but not dramatic. haven't compared battery life yet but don't really expect any improvement there based on feedback in this forum. The hard disk subscore in Vista's control panel/system applet was 5.2 with the 7200 drive, increased to 5.9 with the SSD drive.

while the performance improvement isn't what i had hoped for, i very much like the fact that the machine no longer has a spinning drive - i no longer have to worry about moving it around and potentially banging it on something with the drive spinning.

Hey you can tell me if your temperatures went down? I am thinking of getting SSD just to shut my fan up. Here are my temps from TPFC.62:

Nah man, I dont think it has any effect what so ever on temperatures.... My temperatures are still at Normal Range (64-70*C) and then when Im actively browsing it gets high 70s to mid 80s.

I think im convinved that I have gotten more battery life out of SSD compared to my 7200 Beast, HOWEVER, for now, the heating up of computer and constant fan on is masking the effects. Thats my theory !
