X61s ethernet not working

Not sure what is going on...

I have an X61s. The wireless connection works.

When I check Network Connections, there is no ethernet icon. (the wireless connection and internet icons are there. this previously occured recently with my wireless network icon. it came back when i went into device manager and uninstalled the device and restarted the computer. XP automatically detected the device on startup and fixed the problem.

When I check the ethernet hardware, it indicates that the device is working properly. I cannot access my router though the the ethernet cable. I have tried to use the ethernet cable at 3 different locations without any success.

I have updated the ethernet driver to the most recent version. I have uninstalled the thinkpad access connections and reinstalled the newest version. no success with or without the latest driver. When I try to uninstall or disable the ethernet driver through the hardware page, the computer crashes and I get a blue screen stating that an error has occured.

When I plug in an ethernet cable and disable my wireless, I do not get a connection. The router is working properly and other computers will connect to the router.

When I run PC Doctor, it fails test 2: Test the ethernet adapter. it "failed to open network device"

please help. any suggestions? any advice?
