X61 upgrade

#1 Post by z3wl » Thu Oct 08, 2009 1:49 pm

Hi there i'm a new user of this forum.
I would like to ask you few questions of the X61 if you don't mind.
First these are my specs : T7100 1800*2 Core 2 Duo with 2 Mb L2 cache, 2.5 Gb RAM @667 mhz , 120 Hitachi Hard disk , Intel GM965 (the integrated crap you all know :) ).
I quess the RAM upgrade is not necessary considering i'm running on windows 7 64 bit. I think it would be just a waste of money. I haven't reached 2500 Mb yet. The maximum that windows has eaten was 2300 (NFS most wanted at 1300 MB + windows and other 1000 MB).
Now the interesting part for me : - is there a CPU upgrade available? what is the maximum speed of a Core 2 Duo on the motherboard of X61? Can i change de T7100? Does this motherboard support some new sort of CPU like quad? (hope this doesen't sound stupid - i quess it does not support :) )
- can i upgrade the video card? i know that this one is an integrated chip in the motherboard. Does the X61 have a slot for a dedicated graphics card? I've heard about solutions with docking stations into pci slots...please explain this if you know. Or the pcmcia reader can support a video card better then the integrated one? i mean over 256 dedicated Mb.
If you know other upgrades for this laptop or other solutions please let me know.
So far games playable on this machine (newer games) are : Fifa 2009 works ok , NFS carbon and most wanted , RED ALERT 3 and C&C 3 work fine to , Counter strike source , WoW and the list can continue.
The newest game i've tried was Prototype realesed this summer 2009. Worked almost ok on 640*480 with 15*20 FPS i quess :) . At maximum resolution and details couldn't get more than 5-10 FPS :) . All the games i've installed so far worked. I mean the games lanched ok and they were playable...if you know what i mean
And the last question : Can i increase the resolution of the X61 display? maximum looks like it's 1024*768...and it's not very friendly :)
If somebody can help, any opinion or advice is welcome and good to know.
Cheers

The X series CPUs are soldered to the board. You'd have to swap the board too I think. The best you could do would be the T8300. There's no quad for a X series. It can't take the heat.

There's no internal upgrade as the GPU is again soldered to the board and no option other than the X3100 you have now is available. Maybe there's an external solution like the XG Station, but I've not followed too closely.

You can upgrade the screen, but it's quite an involved process and expensive. There's a long thread about in the X6x forum. You might want to check it out.

I've been learning that the X61t is awful for gaming..never expected to play games on it, but that's sometimes how it works out :?

There's no real "bolt-on" or drop-in upgrades that we can make for these things short of an SSD. Short of mega hardcore mods, of which I am a big fan, the s/t models of the X6 line are known more for durability and portability than power.
X61 Tablet - 1.6GHz C2D, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Vista Business.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em
