Why does X60s sometimes black out?

#1 Post by John H » Wed Oct 14, 2009 6:02 pm

Sometimes the screen just goes black and I have to hit Fn-F7 a couple times.

It just happened running on battery, with about 25% left on the battery. It's happened before, but I don't remember the circumstances.

This is a pretty common problem with the X60/s, I'm afraid. The actual culprit is unknown, but it's a conflict with your video drivers and something else that might be causing the 'screen blanking' effect. If you're experiencing random flickering while you're running on battery, then you have this issue. Newer drivers past a certain point have this issue; older drivers don't.

If this is your problem, look for 945GM drivers with a version of 6.14.10.4450 or older if you're on XP. I'm running Vista on my X60s right now, but have tested the above driver while I was running XP. It works fantastically.

Lenovo seems not to have the old 4450 driver available, so I DLed the currrent 945 driver and installed it. Seems OK, so far.

I found other possible sources for the 4450, but I am distrustful of websites that are unfamiliar to me (though I did find it at cnet, which I guess might be OK).

Can you recommend a decent site where the driver is unlikely to have a virus in case I need to regress the driver?

Sorry I took this long to get back to you. I'd try out your current driver first and see if you still have the problem... you may have gotten a version that would fix it. If not, I still have my copy of 4450 for XP I can send you.

The most recent driver seems OK. It's been working for several days now.
