Video output to TV via VGA-to-component cable?

Would a VGA-to-component cable work with the X61 video card? I read somewhere that the signal data is the same but the sync works differently. My T42p shows "TV" and "monitor" as different output devices, and it uses the "monitor" setting when a TV is connected via VGA so I presume that may be able to use a VGA-to-component cable. Don't see a similar setting on the X61. In any case, I bought a cheap cable off eBay and will be able to test it in a week or so.

my cheap eBay convertor didn't work. If the video card doesn't do TV then it can never work. The guy I brought mine from basically said that in his description but it was very cheap and worth a gamble. Good luck with your one though (but I don't hold out much hope).
I've since got a big monitor to plug my laptop in.

I'm assuming you used it with your X61? Hm shoot. Does anyone have experience with a VGA-to-HDMI or DVI convert? The ~$50 ones seem to only go up to 1680x1050.

Or can the X61 or X6 dock output DVI through the VGA connector, i.e. use a VGA-to-DVI dongle to get DVI?

you can get USB to HDMI/DVI/VGA converters from eBay for about $80. Basically it's USB to DVI but you get 2 adapters to do DVI-HDMI and DVI-VGA. And they are supposed to do upto 1920x1080.

This thing is suitable for office work only, not for games or movies.
And to convert DVI->HDMI, you only need a correct cable (audio will go separately).

Still haven't gotten the component cable yet from Hong Kong. Received the VGA-to-HDMI converter from a US seller, but the image is distorted on the TV in 1920x1080. The picture is squished to the right 3/4 of the screen with a 1/4 black bar on the left. Grrrr. 1388x720 looks right but my tv is 1080p. Duno if it's a defective box. May have to try the USB converter.
