Recomended 3G card

#1 Post by [nordis] » Fri Oct 23, 2009 7:41 am

Hi all.
What mini-pci 3G card do you recomend for the X61s, for use in Sweden.

I've been looking at the Sierra MC8775 and the Ericsson f3507g cards.
Thankfull for all help/suggestions.

Any of these two, or any newer Sierra Wireless card. Actually F3507g supports (up to) 7.2/2.0Mbps speeds (depends also on network support), whereas MC8775 only 3.6/0.375Mbps (I think?). F3507g also has GPS, though your antennas in X61 might not be able to receive the signal. MC8780 and latter cards supports 7.2/2.0Mbps speed (and some GPS, too).

However, only Lenovo-branded version of Sierra Wireless MC8775 will work without extra effort to allow unauthorized cards. F3507g might require only taping pin 20, but might also require patched BIOS. All other cards will require patched BIOS.

Other Lenovo branded cards that may work just by taping pin 20 are:
Qualcomm UNDP1 - Wireless WAN card - FRU: 42T0961 (aka: Part number: 43R9151) - GPS is also supported according to Lenovo
Qualcomm GOBI BroadBand Option: Part number 57Y4485

If you manage to patch your BIOS (and tape pin 20 as and if required?) to accept non-lenovo branded cards you may have the choice of the following, providing they meet your country's specific mobile telecoms network system spec's (technology, frequencry band(s) etc):
Option GTM series 860D/870D
Novatel The Expedite® Series
Huawei EM77X Series
Sierra Wireless MC 87xx Series

R60F: (Integrated Intel GPU) - [ThinkPad R60 15.0" FrankenPad]

Before you do anything else, you need to check what bands the 3G service providers are using in Sweden.

Both the above cards support 850MHz/1900MHz/2100MHz for 3G operation but DO NOT support the 900MHz band for 3G operation.

Cheers,

Thanks.

I have a LG X110 with the f3507g card and at the store they said that this card is going to work up to 21Mbit(down) with future fw update. I'm not sure this is true, or if it's a sales trick :)
At the moment it looks that the f3507g is the card to go for and I know this card works here in Sweden.
The GPS function is not important at this point, only 3G.

Edit: Does the Dell 5530 work with Zender BIOS?

Had both MC8775 and F3507g in my X6 series, will go for F3507g in terms of its down and upload speed, which seems faster than MC8775.
