My thinkpad x60 stopped working the other day -- first a green line down the screen that disappeared temporarily when I flexed the screen, then a few hours later no sign of life although the computer was still plugged in. I haven't tried to repair it yet.

I have bought a new computer (a Macbook, running Windows 7) and want to transfer many of the files from the HD to the new computer, before I try to repair the T60. Can someone help me identify the external HD holder I'll need for the x60 in order to attach the HD to the Macbook?

You should be able to use any SATA usb enclosure to pull the files off that drive.
I bought one at tigerdirect for 10.00, nothing fancy, just the enclosure, two usb cables (one for extra power). Oh and a little carrying case too

Thanks for the suggestions. I just got the Transcend enclosure, which of course comes with no useful instructions for installing your own HD (The Quick Start guide tells you to look on the software CD, but no CD comes with the enclosure-only pkg; and the online manual says nothing.)

Every buyerwho reviews this product says it's a "tight squeeze" but I'm skeptical -- there are four screws, two on each side, of my Hitachi Travelstar SATA HD, and when I try to insert the HD into the enclosure, the screws hit the sides and it won't go in. Could it be that this particular HD wouldn't fit into this particular enclosure because of the placement or size of the side screws?

You should remove those 4 screws and remove the drive cage so the drive is "bare". It should then fit fine. Just hold by the edges avoid touching the IC board.

If it's that tight, do you need the screws?

For quick 2.5" and 3.5" SATA and IDE disk hookups, I use this $26 USB 2.0 to SATA / IDE Cable from Brando Qorkshop. It's not an enclosure, but I've found it very useful. They also have a fancier version for $40.
