Trackpoint driver not loading most of the time

The Trackpoint driver on my Windows XP X61s is not loading on most of the boots. So, there is no Trackpoint settings tab on the Mouse in the Control Panel. The mouse settings control the Trackpoint, which ends up being very insensitive and slow.

Tp4serv.exe is the process I see in the Windows Task Manager. I think that is it. When it works, it is there. When it does not work, it is not there. I went to the Thinkpad driver matrix on the Lenovo site and installed the most current one manually. Same problem. After I reinstall, it will load on the next boot or two, but that is it.

I searched on tp4serv.exe on my hard drive and find it in seven directories, which seems odd. To name a few:

C:\windows\system32
C:\program files\Lenovo\TrackPoint
C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\TRACKPT

I don't know if that is significant.

I tried just clicking on tp4serv.exe if it does not load but that just locks up my computer.

Any tips appreciated!

I had the same issue when I got my new X61 a while back. The solution that worked here was to use this old driver:
