Did my speakers die?

Some weird thing just happened to my X61. Everything was fine with the sound. I ran Skype, and it asked me to install an automatic update which I did. After it was completed, it turned out that I lost the sound. I wasn't getting any sound neither through the internal speakers nor through the headphones connected to the mini jack. So I decided to restart the computer. As soon as it restarted, I got a very loud beep. The only way to shut it was to plug the headphones into my X61. That way the audio in the speakers is completely fine, and you don't hear the beep at all. No matter how many times I restarted the laptop, it didn't help--the loud continuing beep is still coming out. What happened to my X61?

Well, you don't say what operating system you are using but assuming it's Windows, I would goto Device Manager and remove the sound device and then restart the computer.
That should (hopefully) reinstall the drivers correctly. In Windows 7 you get the option to physically uninstall the drivers when you manually remove a device.

as a side note, it should be "speaker" not "speakers", the X6x series only have one :P
