so I picked an x60 up today for my girlfriend. It came with 1gb of ram and because of a mistake I made about a week earlier when ordering ram for my Dell Mini 9 I had an extra 2gb PC2-5300 module laying around. So, I took the two 512mb sticks out and put the 2gb stick in. Well, it wouldn't boot.... I can't find anything saying this shouldn't work.... I also tried to do a BIOS update after this, but I found out it's already on the latest bios version.

Any idea?

As far as I can tell, the Dell Mini 9 also takes DDR2 PC2-5300 modules, so have you tried the module that wouldn't boot inside the X60 in the Dell? If it doesn't work there either, then I'd say you have yourself a bad module. If it does work inside the Dell, then there could be something strange with the module's SPD information or it could simply be a case of a bad contact. And when you say that the X60 won't boot, does it also give off any error beeps?

Try it with one of the 512Meg RAM chips that you had installed earlier. I think that it's also picky about which slot a single module goes into (might have been a different laptop I'm thinking about though).

Yes, I did try it in the Mini 9 before I realized I should be using 6400.... I didn't realize the 5300 should work there at the time. I guess it is bad ram... odd though, it was NIB when I bought it.
