X61s Doesn't recognize battery

I bought an X61s on eBay. Supposedly, its only problem was a dead battery. After installing a replacement battery, the power manager indicated that no battery was installed. I uninstalled power manager, since I read on this forum that power manager doesn't work with some replacement batteries. The Power Options utility that ships with XP also believes that no battery is installed. Anyone have any idea how I go about fixing this?

Is the replacement battery made by lenovo/IBM or is it a knock-off?

It's a knockoff.

Lets forget about charging for a moment...if you put the original battery back in does the laptop see it?

Sort of. The battery is shown with a large red X over it and a message saying something like, "this battery is totally messed up", which is different from how the knockoff battery is displayed: empty battery icon with dashes and "no battery installed"

I'd guess that the knock-off battery is defective. Get a real OEM battery and try that.

Is there any way to verify that there's nothing wrong with the hardware? I would not be pleased to spend $180 on a new Lenovo battery only to find I still have the problem...

Thanks for thinking about this, anyway. I appreciate it.

The only way I know of verifying the hardware is to try a new battery. Maybe a member here can lend you one to test....I would but I no longer have an X60 machine.

Thanks, Harryc.

Does anyone in the Boston area have an X6x battery I could borrow for about 10 minutes?

If so, let me know.

Thanks,
