Windows7 installation error on X61T

#1 Post by kiranvanumati » Tue Dec 29, 2009 12:40 pm

Hi,

I bought a X61tablet recently which came with Windows7 Ultimate 32-bit.
I wanted to install Windows7 64-bit assuming Core2 Duo processor is capable and backed up my hard drive into an external drive.
But I am stuck with error "Windows cannot update boot configuration. Windows cannot be installed".

Lenovo tech rep suggested to change SATA to compatibility mode in BIOS but no luck.
Can anybody suggest me how I will be able to install 64-bit OS if not how can I restore to the back up I created onto external hard drive.

Thanks
Kiran.

How are you installing W7 64bit? Is this a W7 upgrade disc or full retail version? What tool did you use to backup your old hard drive?

Thanks for your reply Harry.

I backed up my hard drive using rescue and recovery to an external hard drive but I believe that it wasn't bootable.
I tried with full retail version of W7 64bit unsuccessfully.
Now I am back to W7 32bit knowing that my X61T is not compatible with 64bit OS.
But I am still confused about the processor information on Intel website saying it's 64bit (may be I didn't understand it completely).

What is your processor? If it's a Core 2 Duo then it is W7 64bit compatible.

The X61T is certainly capable of running Windows 7 x64; I've been doing so since last February. Machine specs are in my signature.

I'm not sure why you are having a problem. Perhaps try resetting the BIOS to default settings and try again? Are you using the latest BIOS, version 1.24?

I tried with both default BIOS settings and also modified settings as per lenovo rep with no success.
I have given up 64bit installation.
My machine specs are same as yours, still wondering why the heck did it go wrong.

I was able to clean install win 7 x64 on my X61T without any issues. (On a single partiton HD, without recovery partition). To move from x86 to X64, you need to do a clean install, by boot from the DVD (whether it is upgrade media or retail version)

The only part that does not work is the bluetooth as Lenovo stopped publish Win 7 drivers.

Maybe you have a defective installation DVD. Compare its MD5 to the value published.
